Ideology and Hegemony

Ideology is a set of ideas beliefs and values that give us a framework for viewing the world. E.g Christianity( a belief in a powerful all-seeing God), feminism( women are unequal and should fight for equality, marxism (seeking equality for all the classes and wants re-distribution of wealth), Nationalism (is a love for your country), capitalism (have a belief in wealth and competition).

Dominant ideologies- those values and beliefs that are shared by most people in a given society. E.g consumerism (a belief that having "stuff" makes us happy).  There is evidence in adverts. E.g a nuclear family is a dominant ideology which is a belief that a happy family involves mum, dad, 2 kids etc...E.g gender of femininity - some of these change overtime. Women should be kind and empathetic... E.g beauty- skinny, young, white, blonde. The context of these ideologies is historical and cultural.

Hegemony explains how dominant ideologies work. Process of content for example media, education, families, government/police etc.
